This carol was composed by William Chatterton Dix around 1860, on January 6, Epiphany, while he was in bed recovering from illness. We thought this piece also fits the theme of Hope for the first Sunday of Advent. We used his verses 1-3 (out of 5). We decided to turn this song into a waltz, because it really seemed to work and we liked it. :)
Original text: “As With Gladness Men of Old” by William Chatterton Dix, 1860
Original melody: by Conrad Kocher, 1838
1. As with gladness, men of old
Did the guiding star behold;
As with joy they hailed its light,
Leading onward, beaming bright;
So, most gracious Lord, may we
Evermore be led to Thee.
2. As with joyful steps they sped
To that lowly manger-bed;
There to bend the knee before
Him Whom heaven and earth adore;
So may we with willing feet
Ever seek thy mercy-seat.
3. As they offered gifts most rare
At that manger rude and bare;
So may we, with holy joy,
Pure and free from sin's alloy,
All our costliest treasures bring,
Christ! to Thee our heavenly King.
(We used verses 1-3 from the original 5.)
